HANDS of St. Lucie County

Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) Clinic

The Volunteers in Medicine Clinic gives free health care.  You may qualify if you do not have any health insurance, Medicaid or Medicare and do not qualify for Veterans benefits. You must live in Martin County and be within a certain income bracket.

To find out if you can use the VIM Clinic, please do the following:

  • Collect the information listed below.  Call 463-4128 to schedule an eligibility screening appointment. 
  • If you qualify, you will be given an appointment to see a doctor. 

Many people would like to use the Clinic.  You can expect a waiting period for your screening appointment. 

If you have Medicare, and are not eligible at the Clinic, please call the Physician Referral # for Martin Memorial at 221-2088.  If you have Medicaid or Medicaid Share of Cost, or you are pregnant, please call Martin County Health Department at 221-4030.

Please bring the following information to your scheduled eligibility appointment.

 For all adult members of family wanting care:

1.      Photo ID
   • Driver's License or State ID or Alien Registration Card

2.      Social Security Card or Birth Certificate
   • If you do not have your Social Security Card, call:
     the Social Security Administration
     at 800-772-1213

3.      Proof of Residence (must have correct address)
   • Florida Driver License or ID Card.  If PO Box is address, then proof of actual residence
   • Current Electric or Telephone Bill

4.      Proof of All Income
  • Must bring proof of income for both spouses, if married. 
  • 4-8 pay stubs or letter from employer stating your current wages on their letterhead

  • Letters from friends, relatives, agencies who provide you with money/ food/clothing/shelter:  Must be signed, dated
    with $ amount of support per week or month

  • Food Stamp verification / Social Security / Alimony / Child Support

  • Unemployment / Workers’ Compensation / Disability

  • Official copy of last year’s tax return or Letter of Non-Filing: obtain free from IRS by calling 800-829-1040.  Do not 
    choose option, hold for operator.  Will mail within 10-14 days.  If already have IRS Form 4506-T to request the
    information, mail to IRS, Atlanta, GA  39901-0002.                 

Once eligibility is determined, an appointment will be made with a physician.  Eligibility to be re-determined every year in order to remain a patient.

Mission is to provide primary health care services to the indigent, medically uninsured and under-insured people of St. Lucie County.  To accomplish this mission, HANDS seeks to:

  • Provide access to health care preventing serious and costly consequences of undiagnosed and untreated illness (e.g. Diabetes)
  • Coordinate existing health services with patient navigation
  • Identify gaps in health care services and act as a medium to extend services to low-income and uninsured St. Lucie County citizens.

HANDS Clinic may provide health care at no charge to you.  To be eligible you must be a resident of St. Lucie County, 18 to 64 years of age, have lived in St. Lucie County continuously for the past six (6) months, and be within a certain income bracket.  You may qualify if you do not have any health insurance, Medicaid or Medicare, and do not qualify for Veterans benefits.
