Tattooing and Areola Re-pigmentation

After a mastectomy, women frequently have either breast preservation or breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction alleviates the deformity of the breast and constructs breasts that meet the patients expectations aesthetically and psychologically.  Nipple/areola re-pigmentation enhances the hue and provides a natural appearance for the breast that has undergone reconstruction.  The appearance of natural looking nipples and areola is achieved by skillfully blending pigments to enhance or recreate your skin's natural colors.

For women that have undergone a mastectomy with breast reconstruction, areola re-pigmentation is often the last step in re-creating a natural looking breast. This procedure is done by way of traditional tattooing and typically requires 2-3 treatments with one month intervals to complete.  The healing time is about 7-10 days.  If there are no areolas at all, measurements are taken for correct placement and then a drawing is done.  Based on the amount of sensation the area has, either local injection or topical numbing will be utilized and generally the process takes a couple of hours.
