Medical Coverage

Medicare covers breast prostheses (including a surgical brassiere) after a mastectomy and lymphadema pumps/pneumatic compression devices.  Medicare will cover the cost of a new breast prosthesis every two years and two post-mastectomy bras every six months.  For more information on Medicare coverage of durable medical equipment and other devices >>

Coverage for breast prostheses associated with mastectomy or lumpectomy is governed by federal and/or state mandates.  Most insurance companies will cover some or all of the costs for these products if they are prescribed by a physician.  Patients should check with their insurance providers for details about the coverage.  Check with your insurance company for assistance under your plan.

Breast reconstruction has become an integral component of the treatment of patients with breast cancer who have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy.  External breast prostheses are available for women who have uneven- or unequal-sized breasts and who decide not to, or are waiting to, undergo surgical breast reconstruction.  They may choose to wear a breast prosthesis and mastectomy bra, or elect to wear a mastectomy garment that has the prosthesis already inserted in it.
